Jim Cleveland was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1946. He began painting in watercolor
at an early age, turning to oils during his pre-teen years. Jim won many awards with drawings
entered annually in the Lunenburg, Nova Scotia exhibition.
He moved to California in 1962, where he completed High School, excelling in art. On
graduation, Jim worked for four years as a draftsman in the aerospace industry, while maintaining
his keen interest in painting.
He joined the Buena Park Art guild, with whom he did shows on fantasy art at Knotsberry
Farm, Movieland Wax Museum and Buena Park City Hall, California.
Anxious to see the world and to observe different cultural art styles, Jim paid an extended
visit to Australia. After selling several paintings there he decided to relocate back to Nova Scotia
to pursue a career as a professional artist. He now resides there permanently with his wife and
children.
Never deviating from his passion for painting, particularly marine and fantasy art, he has
had many exhibitions, including:
- Dalhousie University in 1970 and 1971.
- Atlantic Winter Fair in 1972 and 1973.
- A show of Fantasy Art in New York City in the winter of 1976 that was reported as "the
Event of the Evening" in the New York Times. This show was attended by such people as Andy
Warhol, Orson Welles, Paul Bratanno of Bratanno books and Samuel Wiser of Wiser Books.
- An exhibition in 1977 at the Centennial Gallery, Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, titled "The Gun
Powder Plot" and opening on November 5th. The gallery was formerly a fort's powder magazine.
In the following years Jim painted and sold marine theme paintings in Nova Scotia through
the Maureen MacMullens and Renata Peterson Galleries in Indian Harbor, Atlantic Art Gallery,
Halifax, The Moorings Gallery in Mahone Bay, and three shows at the Lighthouse Gallery in
Moncton, New Brunswick.
Parallel to his marine paintings, Jim built up his collection of Fantasy Art. He entered and
won Best In Show at the Halifax Halcon Fantasy Conventions on three occasions and the
Wolfville Fantasy Convention twice. He has had a collection of Archetypal pictures based on
Celtic mythology published in Stuart Kaplan's Encyclopedia of Tarot. He supplied drawings for
the Rulebook to Dragon Games and the Crystal Shards game.
Jim exhibited his fantasy art collection in 1999 at the Harbour View Gallery, Hubbards,
where it received extensive media coverage and interest.
